How We Can Help You Start a Small Business 2026

Although every startup will have different needs, Sharon M. Gum, CPA follows the same checklist to ensure each of our clients start on the right foot.

Write a Business Plan

We will help you create a roadmap for how to structure, run, and grow your new business.

Obtain Funding

We will offer advice for the best way to finance your business.

Choose a Location

Will you work from home or set up shop in a local building? Your choice could affect your taxes, legal requirements, and revenue. Let us advise.

Pick a Name and Get Registered

What will you name your business? If operating under a name other than your own, you will need to register it with the federal government, and possibly the state. We’ll tell you how.

Get a Tax ID

You need an employer identification number (EIN) to open a bank account and pay taxes. We will set this up for you.

Apply for Licenses and Permits

To stay legally compliant, you must meet industry, state, and local licensing and permit requirements. We’ll walk you through it.

Open a Business Bank Account

You now have all the right paperwork for a small business checking account, which you will need for tax, legal, and everyday issues. We’re familiar with many local banking institutions that would love to work with you.
